Behavior Changes

Alzheimer’s and Dementia are a challenge that our loved ones with these illnesses face every day. Caring Heart’s caregivers, know how to support those who suffer with these diseases. This training involves understanding what to do when one of their clients start to experience personality changes. Most of these changes are caused by the progression of the disease. However, some of these changes can also be caused by the environment

If you are noticing that your loved one is experiencing personality changes while you are visiting them, here are some tips. If it is the environment that is making your loved one act this way, try to adjust the situation as calmly as possible. Even the simplest things such as noise from the outside or even disturbing news on the television or radio can be common factors that trigger these changes. It can even be something as simple as the room temperature or a seasonal allergy of some sort. A key thing to remember is to fix what you can fix.

Try to avoid triggering the undesirable behavior. This means do not try to correct him or her. Just continue having a conversation without addressing the forgotten fact or misremembering of past events. The most important thing to remember is that your loved one’s behavior is not because of you. You might be the victim or target of an angry outburst or a rude comment but that is likely because you happen to be the one person present to witness it.

A very important role that you play for your loved one is being there. They are going through a difficult and confusing time just as much as you are. Your presences for some may represent stability and safety, stand by your loved ones during the best and worst times. At Caring Hearts in-home care, we make sure to be this person for our clients that have no one, or if their loved ones are not able to be with them all the time.
