Summer Heat

With the summer coming this means heat waves will be back on our radar. This is significant for in-home companions. Heat can pose a unique risk to elderly family members. This is not only because they are more susceptible to extreme temperatures, but because they are less aware about their own body temperature.

At Caring Hearts, we want to make sure our clients are aware of their body heat this summer. We do not want any of our clients experiencing extreme heat waves. There are a few tips that we can help with this.

Inspect air conditioning equipment before the extreme temperatures arrive. Fans may be adequate for some warmer weather. Next if you do not have air conditioning, find some place that does. Plan to find shelter on the hottest parts of the day usually this time is noon until 6pm. Stay hydrated, this is a key tip, also stay out of the sun. Next avoid physical exertion, we sweat because our bodies need to maintain healthy temperatures, However, extreme heat makes this even harder. Lastly, know the signs. If your loved one is experiencing dizziness, cramps, headache, etc. these are signs to get out of the sun.
