Bathroom Safety

When we start to age many things that use to not be hazardous now are. One that can become a major hazard is the bathroom. They have slippery surfaces and few dependable things to grasp onto. This highly increases the chances of harm. Is it interesting to learn that nearly 200,000 older Americans are treated in emergency rooms for bathroom-related falls and injuries every year?

Falls can happen for a various of different reasons. Physical issues such as poor muscle strength and balance are strongly associated with increased risk. There are also environmental factors that can create hazardous situations for falling as well. Some of them may include slippery floor tiles when wet, slippery bathtub and shower floor surfaces, stepping in and out of the tub, and much more.

There is hope to help with the bathroom safety. You can modify the bathroom with grab bars. They are essential to making a bathroom a bit safer. Towel bars are good for holding towels but not for holding the weight of a person so make sure your grab bars are sturdy. Next, make grip surfaces. For the tub you can put a stickier surface and for the floor rugs or another additional surface that is sticky even when getting wet can be a good alternative.

Don’t let your loved ones be scared of their own bathroom. Make sure to help them create an environment that they are comfortable with. No one wants to be scared of stepping into a room in their own home.
