Dehydration in Seniors

With the warmer months drawing near we need to keep in mind that dehydration is common within the senior population. Not drinking enough water and other fluids throughout the day can lead to the body failing to carry out normal functions such as digestion and temperature regulation. Drinking more fluids can reverse mild to moderate dehydration, but severe dehydration requires immediate medical treatment.

Some of the common causes of dehydration in seniors are due to vigorous exercise or when the individual cannot access safe drinking water. This can be taken into account while traveling or enjoying outdoor recreation. However, with age seniors tend to have the sensation of being thirsty fade. Even some seniors have cognitive or mobility challenges that limit their ability to secure liquids themselves. The most common symptoms when it comes to dehydration are confusion, difficulty walking, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, low urine output, constipation, inability to sweat or produce tears, and sunken eyes. Excess fluid loss or inadequate fluid intake can lead to an imbalance of sodium and other electrolytes in the body.

At Caring Hearts are knowledgeable and caring staff can coach our seniors on the adequate amount of liquids to consume each day.
